Come work on a fledgling farm of 5 acres. The property was previously an Alpaca farm, and we are converting it to a working and fully integrated farm. We are striving to utilize as much space as possible on our property for food production. We are committed to growing and raising food for our community. We raise Ossabaw Island Hogs, East Friesian milking sheep and heritage poultry and are committed to preservation of genetics. Learn all aspects of market gardening and commercial production; starting and seeding, rotational planting, irrigating, weeding, harvesting, packaging, planning, record keeping, selling and marketing, from a small plot self taught farmer. Learn about the aspects of animal husbandry from start to finish, and the process of setting up a small sheep dairy. We are always eager to learn and to pass on what we know, and eager to learn new things ourselves, we are always open to your thoughts and new ways. I successfully operated a small CSA garden and farm based pie shop on Vancouver Island, and would like to develop the same here.
The apprentice will have an area of responsibility, and weekly discussions involve you in planning, brainstorming and troubleshooting. I also work off the farm, and will be relying on you to fill in for part of many of the days. There will be opportunities to meet the larger community and other farm apprentices. Initially accommodation will be shared, and individual accommodation can be arranged if desired. You may also come on a daily or part time basis if you have your own housing.
Property is a total of 5 acres and located near the ocean, hiking trails, and a quick ferry ride to Nanaimo. If you are a photographer, there are outstanding photographic opportunities here. If you are positive, self-motivated, respectful of others, and are drawn to organic agriculture and learning about full utilization of the land, we would be glad to have you stay with us. Stipend will be provided, as will bus pass and one ferry pass weekly if desired to go to the Nanaimo rock.
Location: Gabriola Island, BC. An (almost hourly) ferry ride from downtown Nanaimo, which is located mid-island of Vancouver Island. A bus system services Nanaimo and Gabriola.
SOIL links Canadian farmers willing to take on and train apprentices with people wanting to work and learn on an organic farm using sustainable practices.
